TOOL MATERIAL MUST BE HARDER , STRONGER THAN THE MATERIAL TO BE CUT.

PROPERTIES :

1. COLD HARDNESS : IT  IS THE AMOUNT OF HARDNESS PROCESSED BY MATERIAL AT NORMAL TEMPERATURE.

2. RED HARDNESS : IT IS THE ABILITY OF A TOOL MATERIAL TO RETAIN OF ITS COLD  HARDNESS EVEN AT VERY HIGH TEMPERATURE.

3. TOUGHNESS :THE PROPERTY  POSSESSED  BY A MATERIAL TO RESET SUDDEN LOAD THAT RESULTS DURING METAL CUTTING  IS CALLED TOUGHNESS.

CLASSIFICATION OF MATERIAL :

1. FERROUS MATERIAL : IRON MAIN CONSTITUENT.

* HIGH CARBON  STEEL . (H.C.S.)
* HIGH SPEED STEEL.        (H.S.S.)


2. NON FERROUS MATERIAL : DON'T HAVE IRON CAST BY ALLOYING ELEMENTS , LIKES ,TUNGSTEN , VENADIUM , MOLYBDENUM  etc.


3.NON METALLIC : MADE OUT OF NON METALLIC .  ( CERAMIC &  DIAMOND ).



H.C.S.  HIGH CARBON STEEL.

*  POOR RED HARDNESS.
*  CUTTING EFFICIENCY IS LOW.



H.S.S.  HIGH SPEED STEEL.

* IT HAS RETAIN HARDNESS AT VERY HIGH TEMPERATURE , GOOD RED HARDNESS.
* CUTTING EFFICIENCY IS HIGH.
* IT IS MADE UP WITH ALLOYING ELEMENTS  [ TUNGSTEN 18 %, CHROMIUM 4% ,VANADIUM 1% ).
